A leap year day turned tragic as a devastating fire engulfed a multi-storied commercial building on Bailey Road in the capital, claiming the lives of 46 individuals. The incident unfolded on Thursday, February 29, leaving behind scenes of chaos and despair.

The bustling eateries and cloth showrooms along Bailey Road, usually crowded on Thursday nights, witnessed an unforeseen catastrophe. At around 10:30 p.m., flames erupted, sending panic and commotion through the vicinity. Pedestrians, patrons, and nearby residents scrambled to safety as the fire rapidly spread, trapping many inside the building.

As the inferno intensified, individuals sought refuge on the roof, desperately trying to evade the engulfing flames and billowing smoke. Meanwhile, an immediate response from the fire service ensued, with eleven units deployed to combat the blaze and rescue those trapped.

Despite valiant efforts, the toll of casualties continued to mount. By the time the fire was brought under control around 11:50 p.m., the grim reality of the tragedy began to unfold. The initial count of casualties rose steadily, with the death toll eventually reaching 46.

Among the deceased, 27 bodies have been identified, while the fate of others remains uncertain. Health Minister Dr. Samant Lal Sen confirmed the death of 43 individuals, with another succumbing to injuries later. Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun provided updates on the fatalities, confirming the loss of 44 lives.

Amidst the tragedy, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and President Md. Sahabuddin expressed profound sorrow and condolences for the victims and their families. A swift investigation was launched by the Directorate of Fire Service and Civil Defense to determine the cause of the fire and assess the building's fire safety standards.
