It's with deep sorrow that the news of journalists Abhishruti Shastri's demise in the Bailey Road fire has surfaced. Abhishruti, a reporter for 'The Report' online, tragically lost his life in the incident that shook the capital.
Colleagues identified Abhishruti's body at the Dhaka Medical College (DMH) hospital morgue on Friday morning, where the process of handing over his body is currently underway. The fire also claimed the life of Tushar Halder, a former video editor at 'The Report' who was working at an IT company named 'Star Tech.'
Abhishruti Shastri, who also pursued studies in the philosophy department of Eden Women's College, hailed from Kushtia. His passing leaves behind a void in both the journalism community and his hometown.
Health Minister Dr. Samant Lal Sen confirmed the tragic news from the Sheikh Hasina National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute.
The fire, which erupted in a six-storey building on Bailey Road at 9:50 pm on Thursday, prompted the response of 13 units of the fire service, who managed to bring the blaze under control by 11:50 pm.
Following the incident, members of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police visited the scene, declaring it a 'crime scene' and cordoning it off with yellow tape. A significant police presence was observed in front of the building, which housed various establishments, including Kacchi Bhai restaurant, Samsung showrooms, Gadgets & Gear, Illiyeen, Khanas, and Pizza Inn outlets.
Expressing deep sorrow over the tragedy, President Sahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have both conveyed their condolences to the families of the victims. Additionally, a five-member investigation committee has been formed to probe the incident further.
