Dhaka, Oct 17 (V7N) – The government has established four new reform commissions, focusing on health, mass media, workers' rights, and women's affairs. These commissions are part of an ongoing initiative to reform various sectors in the country.

National Professor Dr. AK Azad will lead the health commission, while the commission on mass media will be headed by columnist Kamal Ahmed. Syed Sultan Uddin Ahmed has been appointed to lead the workers' rights commission, and Shirin Parveen Haq will chair the commission on women’s affairs.

The announcement was made by Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Adviser for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, during a media briefing at the Foreign Service Academy on Thursday evening. She noted that the newly formed commissions will be fully constituted within the next 7-10 days.

Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam and Special Assistant Mahfuj Alam were also present at the briefing. Rizwana Hasan emphasized the government's commitment to media freedom but urged caution against the dissemination of fake news or disinformation.

The creation of these commissions follows the establishment of five others earlier this year aimed at reforming the electoral system, police administration, judiciary, anti-corruption watchdog, and public administration. These commissions were designed to enhance accountability, efficiency, neutrality, and responsiveness to public needs.

Each commission will include a student representative, though their names have yet to be revealed. The commissions began operations on October 3 and are expected to submit their reports to the Chief Adviser within 90 days.

The initiative comes after Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus announced plans for six reform commissions in a national address on September 11. These commissions aim to address structural improvements in the country's electoral process, police, judiciary, public administration, Constitution, and anti-corruption body.

The Election System Reform Commission will be led by Sushashoner Jonno Nagorik (Shujan) Secretary Badiul Alam Majumder, while the Police Reform Commission will be headed by former secretary Safar Raj Hossain. The Judiciary Reform Commission will be chaired by former Appellate Division Justice Shah Abu Nayeem Mominir Rahman. The Anti-Corruption Reform Commission will be led by Transparency International Bangladesh Executive Director Iftekharuzzaman. Lastly, the Public Administration Reform Commission will be chaired by Biman Bangladesh Airlines Chairman Abdul Muyeed Chowdhury.

These commissions are part of the government's broader efforts to address systemic challenges and implement structural reforms across key sectors in Bangladesh.
