Dhaka, Oct 23 (V7N) — Following last night's intense agitation demanding the resignation of President Md. Shahabuddin, the situation in front of the President’s residence, Bangabhaban, remains under tight security. Although student protestors have not been seen since this morning, law enforcement agencies, including members of the Army and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), are maintaining a strict presence in the area.
Security measures have been reinforced, with new fencing installed in front of Bangabhaban after the previous one was damaged during last night’s protests. While the area remains calm today, the heavy deployment of security forces suggests a state of high alert.
The protests erupted yesterday afternoon when a group of agitators, including leaders from the anti-discrimination student movement, gathered in front of Bangabhaban, demanding the President’s resignation following his controversial remarks in a recent interview. The protestors clashed with security forces as they attempted to break through barricades, leading to a tense standoff with police and army personnel.
At one point, police retreated after facing resistance from the protestors, with one police vehicle being attacked. Some officers reportedly abandoned their weapons, which were later handed over to the army by the protestors.
Hasnat-Sarjis, key leaders of the movement, assured that President Shahabuddin would resign by Thursday. The protestors dispersed around 11:30 p.m. last night, but the atmosphere remains tense, with many awaiting further developments.
The unrest was sparked by comments President Md. Shahabuddin made during an interview with *Human Land*, where he stated he lacked documentary evidence of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation. His comments fueled a political storm, leading to protests from students and activists who accused the President of undermining the interim government.
In response, a circular from the President's press wing on Monday night sought to clarify the issue, stating that the matter of Sheikh Hasina's resignation had been resolved and urging all parties to refrain from destabilizing the country with new controversies.
The situation remains fluid, with many awaiting further announcements from both the President and the protest leaders in the coming days.
