Dhaka, Oct 27 (V7N)- Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed submitted a proposal to the law ministry on Sunday, recommending the creation of an independent secretariat dedicated to the judiciary. The Supreme Court administration confirmed in a press release that the proposal follows his earlier remarks on September 21, during an address to judges, lawyers, and judicial officials at the Supreme Court’s Inner Garden.

In his address, the Chief Justice advocated a "zero-tolerance" policy towards corruption in the judiciary, stressing the need for a comprehensive roadmap to restore public trust through transparent judicial practices. “The goal of a fair judiciary is to serve the people, protect society, and uphold the state’s integrity by ensuring impartial and timely dispute resolution at an affordable cost,” he remarked, adding that judicial independence hinges on a separation from the executive and legislative branches.

Highlighting the creation of a dedicated secretariat as an essential step toward genuine judicial reform, he emphasized that this separation would pave the way for systemic improvements, including the merit-based appointment of judges grounded in honesty and competence, free from political influence.

The Chief Justice further underlined the importance of financial autonomy for the judiciary, viewing it as a critical factor in upholding its independence.
