Dhaka, Nov 24 (V7N) – Dr. Badiul Alam Majumdar, head of the Election Reform Commission, has stated that there is widespread demand for holding previous election commissions accountable for their actions.

He made this statement on Sunday following a meeting with university professors and civil society leaders at the Election Commission office in Agargaon.

Dr. Badiul Alam emphasized that the previous election commissions had conducted controversial elections, breaching their oaths and violating the constitution. He pointed out that nearly everyone is calling for accountability in this regard.

Referring to the meeting with scholars, he said, “Today’s discussion was productive, with experienced individuals sharing their perspectives. It was a genuine dialogue, and we learned much from their views.”

The discussions revealed a unanimous agreement on the necessity of a caretaker government. He also emphasized the need for the Election Commission to be independent, strengthened, and granted financial autonomy.

Dr. Majumdar pointed out that there was strong consensus on the introduction of a "no-vote" provision. The participants also agreed on the importance of political parties for a functioning democracy. He remarked, “Without internal democracy in political parties, it is unrealistic to expect democracy at the state level.”

The meeting also addressed the topic of the presidential election. Many participants supported direct presidential elections and advocated for strengthening the office of the president. There was also agreement on the direct election of women, with dedicated constituencies, and the urgent need for election law reforms.
