Dhaka, Dec 06 (V7N) — Newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam has emphasized a strict stance against corruption, misconduct, and breaches of discipline within the police force. In his first official press conference at the Police Headquarters on Friday, the IGP assured that any proven allegations would result in appropriate departmental and legal action.
IGP Baharul Alam warned that no member of the police force would receive leniency if found guilty of corruption or misconduct. "The police must operate with integrity and professionalism," he stated, adding that disciplinary measures would apply to all levels of the force.
Addressing the controversial actions of the police during the student-public movement in July-August, the IGP admitted that some officers had "gone too far" under the orders of the then-government. However, he also condemned the loss of police lives during the unrest. "Every killing is condemnable. On behalf of the police force, I express regret and apologize to the families of every martyr," he said.
The IGP highlighted the formation of a Police Reform Commission by the interim government. This commission is working to ensure the independence of the police, preventing it from becoming a political tool. "Every officer must perform their duties impartially, focusing solely on the rule of law," Baharul Alam stressed.
In a bid to rebuild the public’s trust, the IGP called on officers to serve with sincerity and professionalism. He emphasized the importance of polite and respectful behavior toward the public, particularly those seeking legal services.
- Judicious Arrests: The IGP assured that no one would face arbitrary arrests simply because their name appeared in a case.
- Crackdown on False Cases: Baharul Alam also warned of legal actions against individuals filing false cases, stressing that the police must not be a vehicle for harassment.
The new IGP’s statements indicate a clear shift towards accountability, professionalism, and independence for the Bangladesh Police. His reform-oriented approach is expected to bolster public confidence in law enforcement and ensure justice for all citizens.
