21st February, on the solemn occasion of International Mother Language Day and Martyrs' Day, the nation comes together to honor the courageous souls who sacrificed everything during the language movement of 1952, securing the rights of the Bangla language.

Designated by UNESCO on November 17, 1999, the 21st of February, known as Ekushey February, is commemorated globally as International Mother Language Day. This year's theme, "Multilingual education: a pillar of learning and intergenerational learning," holds significant importance.

At one minute past midnight, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and President Mohammed Shahabuddin led the nation in laying wreaths at the Central Shaheed Minar, adjacent to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital, paying homage to the martyrs.

Both leaders conveyed heartfelt messages, emphasizing the importance of preserving the Bangla language and culture. President Mohammed Shahabuddin underscored how the spirit of Amar Ekushey continues to inspire the preservation of native languages and cultures worldwide.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina extended warm greetings to people of all languages and cultures, emphasizing the collaboration between Bangladesh and UNESCO since 2000 to honor this day with dignity.

Reflecting on the historical significance, she highlighted the language movement's role in shaping a non-communal, democratic state structure based on language.

A public holiday is observed nationwide, with the Central Shaheed Minar adorned with paintings, graffiti, and buntings, reflecting the spirit of the day. Stringent security measures are in place, ensuring safety at the Minar and surrounding areas.

Various organizations, including the ruling Awami League, have organized cultural events to commemorate the day. Flags fly at half-mast, and special prayers are held at mosques and other places of worship.

Bangladesh missions abroad are also participating, organizing events such as wreath-laying ceremonies and discussions on Bangabandhu and the Language Movement.

Educational and cultural institutions across the country are hosting book fairs, seminars, and exhibitions, promoting linguistic and cultural diversity.

Additionally, children and students have the opportunity to visit museums and archaeological sites free of charge.

The Awami League has outlined extensive programs, including wreath-laying ceremonies, discussions, and a procession to honor the martyrs. Eminent personalities will address a discussion chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

This day commemorates the sacrifices of Salam, Rafique, Shafique, Jabbar, and Barkat, who laid down their lives for the cause of establishing Bangla as the state language of Pakistan. Their bravery ignited a movement that eventually led to the independence of Bangladesh.
