Dhaka, Dec 10 (V7N) – The National Citizen's Committee has declared that national elections in Bangladesh should not occur before ensuring justice for alleged killings during the Awami League's 15-year rule.
"Justice must precede elections. The perpetrators of murders during the Awami League's regime must be held accountable. Without justice for our martyrs and the injured from the July uprising, neither politics nor elections can succeed," said committee convener Nasir Uddin during a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan, marking International Human Rights Day.
The event, organized by Mayer Daak, a platform advocating for families of victims of enforced disappearances allegedly linked to government agencies, drew families of victims alongside leaders from political parties, including the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami.
Addressing the gathering, BNP Standing Committee member Moyeen Khan emphasized the people's commitment to truth, justice, and fundamental rights, citing the July uprising as evidence of their dedication to democracy.
Highlighting ongoing reforms across sectors, Khan stated, "Reforms in the judiciary, constitution, and administration are necessary, but self-reform is paramount. We must remain united for the country's independence and sovereignty."
The rally underscored a collective call for accountability and systemic change before proceeding with national elections.
