Dhaka, Dec 13 (V7N)- Helal Hafiz, the celebrated poet known for his rebellious spirit and poignant expressions of love, has passed away at the age of 76. The poet was declared dead by doctors at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) in Dhaka on Friday afternoon.

According to BSMMU authorities, Hafiz suffered a fatal injury after falling in the bathroom of his residence, Super Home, in Shahbagh, Dhaka, around 2:30 pm.

Hafiz’s poetry, especially during Bangladesh's anti-authoritarian movements, resonated deeply with the people. His iconic lines from the poem Nishiddho Sampadokiyo ("Forbidden Editorial")—"Ekhon Joubon Jar, Michhile Jabar Tar Shreshtho Shomoy" ("Those who are young, now is the best time to join the procession")—became a rallying cry during protests.

In recognition of his immense contribution to Bangla literature, Hafiz was awarded the prestigious Bangla Academy Award in 2013, alongside numerous other accolades, including the Khalekdad Chowdhury Award.

The poet’s works, particularly his debut collection Je Jale Agun Jwole (The Water That Burns), which was published in 1986, continue to inspire. The book has gone through over 33 editions, underscoring its lasting impact on readers and poets alike.

Hafiz was also a respected journalist, contributing to prominent newspapers, including Jugantor. Despite battling various health issues over the years, including glaucoma, kidney complications, diabetes, and neurological disorders, Hafiz's literary legacy remains immortal.

His namaz-e-janaza will be held at the National Press Club after Zuhr prayer on Saturday. He is survived by his family and countless admirers whose lives he touched with his powerful words.
