Sylhet, Dec 21 (V7N) — Addressing concerns over misuse of legal proceedings, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam assured that innocent individuals falsely implicated in cases would not face arrest. He emphasized that investigations would be conducted with due diligence to prevent harassment and maintain public trust.

The IGP made these remarks during a view-exchange meeting with officers from various units at the Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) headquarters on Saturday afternoon. He acknowledged that some unscrupulous individuals had tried to exploit ongoing cases, but reiterated the police's commitment to fairness and professionalism.

The police chief noted that the force's morale and professionalism had been compromised over the past 15 years due to political exploitation. "The biggest challenge now is to restore the force's enthusiasm," he said, pledging to shield the police from political influence and establish it as a trusted and professional institution.

Highlighting ongoing reforms, the IGP admitted that in the past, some members of the police had engaged in crimes to serve partisan interests, a situation he described as "shameful." He assured that the focus is now on rebuilding the police's image and credibility, aiming to restore its rightful role as a protector of public trust.

The IGP also provided an update on efforts to recover weapons looted across the country. "So far, 6,000 weapons have been recovered, but 2,000 remain unaccounted for," he stated. He called for public cooperation to assist the police in this critical task.

The meeting underscored the importance of reforms, transparency, and public engagement as the police force works to rebuild its reputation and effectiveness.
