Dhaka, Dec 23 (V7N) — Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury announced that a formal request has been made to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to initiate the process of extraditing former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from India.

Speaking at a program at the BGB headquarters in Pilkhana on Monday afternoon, the advisor confirmed, "We have already sent a letter to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The extradition process is underway."

In response to queries about the legal framework for her return, he mentioned, "We have a prisoner exchange agreement with India, and the process will be conducted under the provisions of that agreement."

Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted from her position as Prime Minister on August 5 following a mass uprising led by students and the public, fled to India shortly after her removal.

Following the fall of the Awami League government, an interim government was established on August 8, headed by Nobel laureate economist Dr. Muhammad Yunus. The new government reconstituted the International Crimes Tribunal to investigate and prosecute individuals allegedly involved in crimes during the coup.

The tribunal has already received several complaints, including those implicating Sheikh Hasina. Efforts to extradite her are part of the broader process of addressing the allegations linked to the recent political turmoil.
