New Delhi, Jan 08 (V7N) — India has extended the visa of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, according to a report published by the Hindustan Times on Wednesday. While the report did not specify the exact date of the visa extension, it confirmed that the Indian Home Ministry and the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) were involved in the process.
The Hindustan Times clarified that the visa extension does not equate to granting political asylum to Sheikh Hasina, dismissing widespread rumours.
This development follows Bangladesh’s formal request on December 23, 2024, to extradite Sheikh Hasina to face charges of genocide and crimes against humanity. However, on January 3, 2025, the Hindustan Times reported that the Indian government was unlikely to comply with Dhaka’s request due to incomplete formalities on Bangladesh's part.
Meanwhile, the Bangladeshi government has escalated its actions against Sheikh Hasina and other political figures. On January 7, authorities announced the cancellation of passports for 75 individuals, including Sheikh Hasina and several Awami League leaders, citing alleged involvement in killings during the July-August period. Additionally, the passports of 22 more individuals were revoked for alleged involvement in disappearances and murders.
The timing of Sheikh Hasina’s visa extension by India has drawn attention amid these developments. The situation highlights the complex dynamics between Dhaka and New Delhi as Bangladesh intensifies its crackdown on political opponents.
