Dhaka, Jan 12 (V7N) — Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Pranay Verma, stated that there is mutual understanding between India and Bangladesh regarding the construction of a border fence for security purposes. He also emphasised India’s expectation of Bangladesh’s cooperation in reducing border-related crimes.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with Bangladesh's Foreign Secretary on Sunday afternoon, Verma highlighted the ongoing communication between the Border Security Force (BSF) of India and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) to prevent illegal infiltration and smuggling. "India and Bangladesh are actively working together to curb border crimes," he said.
The statement comes amidst concerns raised by Bangladesh over the construction of a barbed wire fence along the shared border. Earlier in the day, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Indian High Commissioner to formally protest the move.
In a press conference, Home Affairs Advisor Jahangir Alam Chowdhury addressed the issue, assuring that the government would communicate with the Indian High Commission to prevent any untoward incidents.
Both nations reiterated their commitment to maintaining peace and security along the border, aiming to strengthen bilateral relations while addressing mutual concerns.
