Dhaka, Jan 19, (V7N) - Dr. Fahmida Khatun, Executive Director of the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), has raised significant concerns regarding Tulip Siddiq’s involvement in representing Bangladesh on the international stage. During a seminar and debate competition on “Increasing Remittance” held on Saturday, Dr. Khatun questioned how Tulip, who is not a Bangladeshi citizen or even a common citizen, could represent the country in Russia alongside the aunt of the ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Dr. Khatun also addressed ongoing allegations surrounding Tulip, including accusations of financial misconduct. She emphasized that these allegations were becoming more intense, urging that if proven true, Tulip would have to resign from her position as Member of Parliament and potentially lose her membership in the Labour Party.
In addition to raising concerns about Tulip, Dr. Khatun called for better support and respect for expatriates. She urged foreign embassies and banks to become more proactive in serving migrant workers and their needs. She also pointed out that the quality of services, such as food offered in airport lounges for expatriates, should be tailored to their preferences and needs. Dr. Khatun emphasized the critical role of migrant workers, describing them as the "golden goose" for the nation's economy.
The seminar featured a keynote speech by migration expert and Chairman of Debate for Democracy, Hasan Ahmed Chowdhury Kiran, who highlighted the vital role of migrant workers in the country’s development. He referred to them as the “real heroes” of the nation, underscoring that the country’s progress was largely driven by their remittances.
Notable speakers at the event included Professor Belal Hossain, Vice-Chancellor of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University; Professor Tajul Islam Chowdhury Tuhin; Professor Jahangir Alam; Professor Kazi Ahsan Habib; and Professor Tamanna Begum, Principal of Begum Badrunnessa Government Women's College. The event was organized by the Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Debating Society.
