Dhaka, Jan 26 (V7N)— Syeda Rizwana Hasan, advisor to the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, has reaffirmed the government's commitment to eradicating illegal polythene shopping bags despite resistance from vested interests.
Speaking virtually at a meeting with district administrators held at Pani Bhaban in Dhaka on Sunday afternoon, the advisor condemned an attack on officials during a raid at a banned polythene manufacturing factory in the capital's Chawkbazar earlier in the day. She assured that legal action has been taken against those obstructing government operations and attacking officials.
Rizwana Hasan highlighted the environmental threat posed by polythene waste, stating, “Every day, 1.25 crore polythene bags are being produced as waste. To protect the environment, the production and marketing of polythene must be stopped. Achieving this goal requires collective effort and public awareness.”
The advisor also stressed the importance of safeguarding natural resources, including fish populations, and announced that campaigns against illegal mountain and hill cutting would continue. She further added that stricter actions would be taken against unauthorized brick kilns and the destruction of agricultural land.
The Ministry’s renewed efforts aim to combat environmental degradation and promote sustainable practices across the country.
