Dhaka, Apr 22 (V7N)- The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has officially denied media reports claiming that the case diary of the Sagar-Runi murder case was destroyed in a fire while in the custody of the Detective Branch (DB).

Addressing the matter, DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) Muhammad Talebur Rahman told reporters on Tuesday (April 22) that such information is "not correct" and has no basis in the official court proceedings.

“The investigation period of the Sagar-Runi murder case has been extended by another six months. Some are reporting that the DB documents were burnt, which is not true,” he clarified.

Rahman further stated that nowhere in the court proceedings was it mentioned that the documents had been destroyed in a fire. The reports circulating in electronic and print media, he stressed, were factually incorrect.

Echoing similar sentiments, Additional Attorney General Arshad Rouf acknowledged that retrieving old documents has become time-consuming due to frequent transfers of DB officers over the years. However, he reiterated that no official claim has been made regarding the destruction of the case file.

The clarification comes just after the High Court granted a six-month extension to the task force investigating the high-profile 2012 murder of journalist couple Sagar Sarwar and Meherun Runi, amid growing public frustration over the prolonged delay in resolving the case.

This latest development adds another layer of scrutiny to the handling and preservation of vital case materials, which are crucial for solving what remains one of the most sensational and unresolved murder cases in Bangladesh’s recent history.
