Dhaka, Apr 30 (V7N)- The Election Commission (EC) has blocked the National Identity Card (NID) of Sultanuzzaman Md. Saleh Uddin, former Director General of the NID Division and ex-Managing Director of Bangladesh Machine Tools Factory (BMTF), following a directive from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The ACC requested the block as part of a corruption investigation, citing the need to prevent Saleh Uddin and another individual—reportedly his wife—from traveling abroad. The EC’s IT branch executed the block upon receiving formal approval.
The ACC's investigation stems from Saleh Uddin’s involvement in a controversial smart card deal with the French company Aberthar, during his tenure at the NID Division. The contract has remained unfulfilled, yet the EC is still paying penalties due to non-delivery.
Blocking a person’s NID restricts access to key citizen services, including banking, travel, and property transactions.
It’s worth noting that the EC has also reportedly blocked the NIDs of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 10 members of her family, indicating an intensified crackdown on high-profile individuals amid allegations of misuse of power and corruption.
