Joint security forces have successfully apprehended four individuals, including the driver of a jeep known as "Chander Gari," and three members associated with the Kuki-Chin National Front (KNF). The arrests are in connection with the recent bank robberies and arms looting incidents that occurred in Bandarban's Thanchi and Ruma upazilas.
On Sunday night, a coordinated operation led to the arrest of Bhanunun Nuam Bom, Jeminew Bom, Ame Loncheo Bom, and driver Mohammad Kafil Uddin Sagar at the Suwalok checkpoint in the Thanchi and Bandarban Sadar areas.
According to Bandarban Police Superintendent Saikat Shahin, the individuals were swiftly brought before the court, with pending cases against them.
In response to the escalating situation, four armored personnel carriers (APCs) were deployed to Ruma and Thanchi on Monday morning to bolster security measures. Considering the gravity of the circumstances, there is a possibility of increasing the number of APCs.
In a related development, the KNF announced an indefinite ban on all vehicular movement in the regions of Ruma, Thanchi, and Rowangchhari in Bandarban starting from 5 pm on Monday.
Zakir Hossain, representing the Ruma Bus Owners Association, noted that public transport and other vehicle movements had ceased since the morning, with locals refraining from leaving their homes except for emergencies.
The incidents leading to the arrests included an attack by KNF members on Sonali Bank and Krishi Bank in Thanchi upazila of Bandarban, resulting in the looting of Tk15,00,000 and Tk2,45,000, respectively. Prior to this, gunmen broke into the vault of Sonali Bank in Ruma upazila and looted approximately Tk2 crore.
