May Day, a historic occasion commemorating the sacrifices of workers worldwide, will be celebrated on Tuesday with reverence and significance. Originating from the events of 1886 at Hay Market, Chicago, where workers advocated for an eight-hour workday and labor rights, the day holds profound importance globally.
This year's theme, "Sramik-Malik Gorbo Desh, Smart Hobey Bangladesh" (Honoring Workers and Employers, Making Bangladesh Smarter), underscores the pivotal role of labor in national development.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have issued separate messages ahead of this auspicious day, extending their greetings to workers globally, including those in Bangladesh, and wishing success for all commemorative programs.
President Shahabuddin highlighted the legacy of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who championed the rights of workers throughout his life. Notably, Bangabandhu officially recognized May Day as a public holiday and established a wage commission to ensure fair treatment for workers. Bangladesh's membership in the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the ratification of several conventions underscore the nation's commitment to labor rights and welfare.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina echoed these sentiments, emphasizing Bangabandhu's vision of a society free from exploitation. Under her leadership, the government has enacted progressive policies, including the Bangladesh Labour (Amendment) Act, 2018, aimed at ensuring a safe working environment and social security for workers.
Both leaders expressed confidence in the collective efforts of workers and employers to bolster national production and build a developed Bangladesh in line with Bangabandhu's vision.
Various organizations, including the ruling Awami League, have arranged extensive programs for May Day, including rallies, discussions, seminars, cultural events, and special supplements in national newspapers. Additionally, Bangladesh Television, Bangladesh Betar, and private TV channels will broadcast special programs, while the Ministry of Labour and Employment has organized a discussion meeting, with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina set to address the gathering.
The spirit of May Day serves as a reminder of the importance of labor rights and the ongoing efforts to ensure the welfare and prosperity of workers in Bangladesh and beyond.
