West Bengal CID has announced its plans to request the extradition of Akhtaruzzaman Shahin, the primary suspect in the murder of Jhenaidaha-4 MP Anwarul Azim Anar in Kolkata, under the bilateral treaty with the US.
"India has an extradition treaty with the United States, but Bangladesh does not have such an agreement. We aim to extradite Shahin to India as the crime occurred in our state," a senior CID officer, speaking anonymously, stated on Saturday.
Shahin, a close friend and business associate of Anwarul Azim Anar and a US citizen, is believed to be in New York City.
Bangladesh Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan confirmed that his ministry is collaborating with India, Nepal, Interpol, and the US to locate Shahin.
"Certainly, we are pursuing Akhtaruzzaman Shahin. He is a key suspect and wanted. We have sought assistance from Indian, Nepalese, and US law enforcement agencies to bring him to trial," Asaduzzaman Khan told PTI.
"We are working on a process to bring Shahin back. We are in contact with all relevant agencies, including Interpol, to ensure justice for our parliamentarian's family. We have already arrested three individuals, including a woman. Two of them have criminal records, and we are investigating the background of the woman," he added.
Regarding the motive behind the murder, the home minister said, "We will reveal it soon."
West Bengal CID sources indicated that Shahin fled to Nepal on May 18 after Anar's murder, then traveled to Dubai before reaching New York.
On May 11, Anar traveled to Kolkata for medical treatment and disappeared on May 13.
Indian investigators revealed that Shahin used a Bangladeshi model to lure Anar to an upscale flat in Kolkata's New Town area, where Anar was killed within 15 minutes of entering. Anar was rendered unconscious with chloroform and then smothered to death with a pillow.
Jihad Hawaladar, a butcher from Khulna arrested by West Bengal CID, allegedly skinned and dismembered Anar's body, which was then disposed of in plastic bags at various locations near Kolkata.
Despite ongoing efforts, the body of the slain MP has not yet been found. West Bengal police continue to search for Anar's body parts near Bhangar, utilizing drones, underwater cameras, and divers to inspect several ponds in Polerhat.
