A Dhaka court has issued an arrest warrant for Siam Hossain, a prime suspect in the murder of Jhenaidah-4 lawmaker Anwarul Azim Anar, who was killed in India last month.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Mahbubul Haque issued the order after Mahfuzur Rahman, assistant commissioner of the Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police and the case's investigating officer, submitted an application on Sunday.

Nepalese police recently arrested Siam Hossain, who fled to Kathmandu after the murder.

Bangladesh police had confirmed Siam’s location and requested Nepal’s National Central Bureau to detain him.

Sources indicated that Kathmandu police are willing to hand Siam over to Bangladeshi authorities. However, the absence of an extradition treaty between the two nations has complicated the repatriation process.

The investigating officer noted that an arrest warrant would facilitate bringing Siam back to Bangladesh, according to media reports.

Lawmaker Anwarul Azim Anar from the ruling Awami League had crossed the Darshana-Gede border into India for treatment on May 12. He stayed at a friend’s house in North 24 Parganas, West Bengal.

On the following day, Anar left to visit a doctor and was expected to return by evening. However, a WhatsApp message from his phone indicated he had gone to Delhi instead and would call if needed.

After this, he could not be reached. The government later confirmed his death on May 22, citing Indian police.
