Dhaka, July 16(V7N) – Today, the nation solemnly observes the imprisonment day of Awami League (AL) President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Sheikh Hasina was detained at her Sudha Sadan residence in Dhanmondi on July 16, 2007, under the military-backed caretaker government that took power during the political shift known as 1/11 in 2007.
The Awami League and its affiliate organizations mark this day as the "Imprisonment Day of Sheikh Hasina."
Sheikh Hasina was released from the special sub-jail on the Jatiya Sangsad (parliament) premises on June 11, 2008, after nearly 11 months of captivity.
During her imprisonment, concerns about her health led to widespread calls for her release and better medical treatment abroad. These demands came from various sectors, including the Awami League and its allied groups.
Yielding to persistent public demand and pressure from diverse quarters, the caretaker government released Sheikh Hasina.
Notably, the Dhaka City unit of AL gathered 2.5 million signatures, presented to the caretaker government, demanding her release.
Her release marked a significant restoration of democratic rights, fostering both democracy and development.
Today, the Awami League and its affiliates are expected to commemorate the day with various programs, including discussions, milad, and doa-mahfils.
