Feni is grappling with its worst flooding in recent memory, resulting in one confirmed death, several missing individuals, and the rescue of over 400 people. Torrential rains and swollen rivers have submerged vast areas across Fulgazi, Parshuram, and Chhagalnaiya upazilas, leaving roads, homes, and farmland underwater.

Feni, Aug 22 (V7N) - In the worst flooding in recent memory, Feni has reported one fatality, several missing persons, and over 400 rescues. Floodwaters have engulfed nearly all areas of Fulgazi, Parshuram, and Chhagalnaiya upazilas, submerging roads, homes, and agricultural lands. The rivers Muhuri, Khowai, and Sillonia are flowing 90 cm above their danger levels.

In Fulgazi upazila, over 40 villages in the Sadar, Anandpur, Munshirhat, and Amjadhat unions, as well as more than 45 villages in Mirzangor, Chithlia, Boxmahmud, and the municipal town of Parshuram, are inundated. Chhagalnaiya’s entire area, including Pathan Nagar, Radhanagar, and Shubhopur unions, is also submerged, with roads, ponds, and farmlands covered by water.

Some areas have floodwaters reaching the roofs and tin coverings of homes. In response, local authorities and volunteer groups have initiated relief efforts to aid those affected.

Reports indicate that breaches in the Muhuri, Khowai, and Sillonia rivers at 15 locations early last month caused significant damage in Fulgazi and Parshuram. Although repairs were made, further breaches at 12 additional points at the beginning of this month led to flooding in over a hundred villages, resulting in damage exceeding 30 crore taka to infrastructure, rice, crops, and fisheries. Recent heavy rains and upstream flows from India have exacerbated the flooding within just 15 days.

Parshuram Upazila Executive Officer Afroza Habib Shapla informed the reporter that this historic flood has submerged nearly all villages in the local municipality and three unions, leaving many people stranded. Since early morning on August 21, fire service personnel and volunteer students have used two dinghy boats to rescue individuals and relocate them to safety. Approximately 100 people have been rescued, and the assistance of the army and coast guard has been requested. There is one confirmed missing person. The upazila administration has distributed 500 packets of dry food and prepared an additional 500 packets and 50 tons of rice.

Fulgazi Upazila Executive Officer Tania Bhuiyan reported that the flood has inundated most villages in six unions, causing widespread stranding. Rescue operations using dinghy boats have saved around 300 people so far. The army and coast guard have begun assisting in the rescue efforts. There has been one confirmed death, and water levels continue to rise. The upazila administration has distributed 500 packets of dry food and has 500 more packets and 18 tons of rice ready.

Abul Kashem, Sub-Divisional Engineer of the Water Development Board, noted that the Muhuri River is flowing 90 cm above the danger level. The situation could worsen due to heavy rains and upstream flows from India.

Munir Hossain, an observer at the Feni Weather Office, reported 99 millimeters of rainfall in the last 24 hours.

Lieutenant Colonel Sheikh Mohammad Badruddoza, commander of 4 BGB in Feni, stated that BGB boats and trawlers are transporting stranded individuals to safe shelters and distributing clean drinking water and emergency food supplies. BGB will continue its rescue and support operations until the flood situation improves.

Feni District Commissioner Morsammat Shahina Akhter confirmed that the administration is actively engaged in rescue and relief efforts with the help of the army, BGB, coast guard, fire service, and local volunteers.
