Dhaka, Aug 23 (V7N): The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rainfall across various regions of the country over the next three days due to an active monsoon over the Bay of Bengal.

Within the next 24 hours, thunderstorms with gusty winds are likely to occur in most parts of the Chittagong and Sylhet divisions, with some areas expected to experience very heavy rainfall.

The meteorological office has also issued a warning about the potential risk of landslides in the hilly areas of the Chittagong division due to the anticipated heavy rainfall.

The monsoon trough extends from Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and central Bangladesh to Assam, with a portion reaching the northern Bay of Bengal. The monsoon is currently active over Bangladesh and is in a moderate to strong state over the northern Bay of Bengal.

The 24-hour weather forecast, starting from 9 am on Friday, predicts light to moderate rain or thunderstorms with temporary gusty winds in most places across the Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong, and Sylhet divisions. In addition, some areas may experience moderate to very heavy rainfall.

The forecast for Saturday predicts similar weather conditions in the Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong, and Sylhet divisions, with the possibility of moderate to very heavy rainfall in some areas.

Sunday's forecast also includes light to moderate rain or thunderstorms with temporary gusty winds in most places across these divisions, with some areas potentially experiencing moderate to very heavy rainfall.

In the past 24 hours, Ishwardi recorded the highest rainfall in the country at 164mm. Other notable measurements include 151mm in Cox's Bazar, 143mm in Ambagan, 97mm in Rangamati, 90mm in Sitakunda and Ramgati, 87mm in Chittagong, 84mm in Sandwip, 81mm in Khepupara, 73mm in Maijdi Court, 70mm in Hatiya, 66mm in Satkhira, 65mm in Barisal, 63mm in Khulna, 62mm in Gopalganj, 60mm in Mongla, 59mm in Tarash, 49mm in Bhola and Comilla, 48mm in Jessore, 45mm in Teknaf, 37mm in Bogra, 36mm in Kumarakhal, Bandarban, and Badalgachhi, 33mm in Mymensingh, 24mm in Chandpur, 18mm in Rajshahi, 15mm in Faridpur, 14mm in Patuakhali, 13mm in Nikli, 11mm in Chuadanga, 10mm in Netrakona, 9mm in Rangpur, 8mm in Aricha and Dinajpur, 5mm in Dhaka, 4mm in Narayanganj and Tangail, 3mm in Sylhet, and 2mm in Koyra, Srimangal, and Madaripur, with 1mm recorded in Syedpur and Dimla.

For the period from 10 am to 6 pm on Friday, the weather forecast for the inland river ports indicates that areas including Rajshahi, Faridpur, Madaripur, Jessore, Kushtia, Khulna, Barisal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Comilla, Chittagong, and Cox's Bazar may experience temporary gusty or squally winds from the south or southeast at speeds of 45 to 60 kilometers per hour, accompanied by rain or thunderstorms.

River ports in these areas have been advised to hoist cautionary signal number 1.
