Dhaka, August 28 — In response to the rising egg prices, the National Directorate of Consumer Protection carried out midnight raids on egg wholesale shops and stalls in the Kawranbazar area of the capital. The operation, conducted on Tuesday night with the assistance of students, aimed to check price manipulation and ensure fair trade practices.
During the raids, a dealer was fined 10,000 taka for listing inflated prices on the price list and sales receipt. Additionally, a wholesale buyer was also fined 10,000 taka for similar violations.
The Consumer Affairs Department revealed that there was collusion among traders to buy eggs at lower prices and sell them at inflated rates. To support this scheme, fake receipts were generated to deceive customers and justify the higher prices. The department's crackdown is part of broader efforts to stabilize the market and protect consumers from exploitation.
