Dhaka, Sept 02 (V7N): Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury has stepped down from her position as the Speaker of Parliament. Sources at Bangabhaban have confirmed that she submitted her resignation letter to President Mohammed Shahabuddin on Monday.
This development follows the resignation and departure of Sheikh Hasina as Prime Minister on August 5, amid a mass uprising. Subsequently, the president dissolved parliament, and an interim government was sworn in on August 8.
Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury's resignation comes 27 days after the fall of Hasina's government.
Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury made history on April 30, 2013, when she became the first woman to serve as the Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad. At the age of 46, she was also the youngest person to hold this office.
