Dhaka, Sep 13 (V7N) – Japan has pledged $1 million in aid to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) to support flood relief efforts in northern and southeastern Bangladesh.

The donation comes in response to severe flooding that began on August 17 due to intense monsoon rains, impacting 11 districts. As of September 7, approximately 4.71 million people have been affected, with 71 reported deaths and 207,191 individuals seeking refuge. Some areas remain inaccessible due to ongoing rescue operations.

With the Japanese funds, UNHCR will provide shelter and essential non-food items to 2,000 households, along with support for water, sanitation, and hygiene. UNICEF will assist 375,000 people in Noakhali, Comilla, Lakshmipur, Feni, Chittagong, and Moulvibazar with similar support.

Japanese Ambassador to Dhaka, Iwama Kiminori, expressed his sympathy for those affected by the floods and reaffirmed Japan's commitment to aiding Bangladesh in disaster response. He emphasized that Japan stands with Bangladesh during this challenging time and hopes that UNHCR and UNICEF will deliver necessary relief swiftly.

Sumbul Rizvi, UNHCR representative in Bangladesh, acknowledged Japan's continued support for the Rohingya refugee crisis and highlighted how the funds will assist in providing emergency aid to refugees in Cox’s Bazar affected by recent floods and mudslides.

UNICEF Representative Rana Flowers noted that the floods have severely impacted access to clean water and sanitation, posing health risks to children and families. She expressed gratitude for Japan's support in addressing these critical needs and preventing disease outbreaks.

In addition to this contribution, Japan has previously provided $2 million in emergency aid through the Japan Platform, which supports various Japanese NGOs in delivering relief supplies and medical care. Japanese businesses and associations in Dhaka have also contributed 200,000 Bangladeshi Taka to the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society to aid flood-affected individuals and families.

The Japanese embassy in Dhaka affirmed Japan's ongoing commitment to supporting Bangladesh's recovery and fostering a prosperous future through this comprehensive aid effort.
