Dhaka, Sep 21 (V7N)- Bangladesh is sending a 57-member delegation, including security personnel and media representatives, to the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The announcement was made by Foreign Affairs Adviser Touhid Hossain during a press conference held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday.

Addressing the media, Hossain stated that the current interim government has opted for a leaner delegation, focusing on necessary personnel only. He noted that in the past, larger delegations were sent, but did not elaborate on why previous governments had opted for such numbers.

"This time, we are sending a total of 57 people to New York, with a large portion dedicated to security and the press. We have made a conscious effort to avoid unnecessary spending, ensuring only essential personnel are included," Hossain said.

In comparison to previous years, the foreign adviser highlighted that the delegation size has been significantly reduced. For instance, 344 and 335 delegates attended the 73rd and 74th UNGA sessions respectively. During the pandemic, the 75th session was held virtually, and 108 delegates participated. The 76th, 77th, and 78th sessions saw 108, 138, and 146 delegates respectively.

The high-level debate for the 79th session of the UNGA is set to commence on 24 September 2024. The Chief Adviser of the interim government is scheduled to arrive in New York on 23 September via a commercial flight to lead Bangladesh’s participation in the session.
