Microsoft has announced a significant investment of four billion euros for the development of data centers in France, aligning with fellow US giant Amazon's commitment to the country's tech infrastructure.
The announcement was made ahead of the seventh Choose France Summit, which aims to attract foreign investors to the country and will be hosted by President Emmanuel Macron at the Chateau of Versailles near Paris.
Brad Smith, President of Microsoft, stated that this investment marks the tech giant's largest-ever commitment to France since its establishment in the country 41 years ago. He highlighted France's dedication to carbon-free energy markets and its leadership role in Europe as factors influencing the decision.
The investment will involve the creation of a new data center in eastern France, along with the expansion of existing sites in the Paris region and the southern city of Marseille.
Meanwhile, Amazon has also pledged to invest over 1.2 billion euros in France, aiming to create more than 3,000 jobs. This investment will focus on developing Amazon Web Services' (AWS) cloud infrastructure and enhancing the logistical infrastructure of its parcel delivery service.
AWS, a key subsidiary of Amazon, has experienced significant growth, generating $25 billion worldwide in the first quarter, driven by increasing demand for remote computing and artificial intelligence services among businesses.
As the Choose France Summit kicks off, several pharmaceutical companies, including Pfizer and AstraZeneca, have also announced commitments to invest over a billion euros in France's health sector.
Additionally, a notable industrial project on the horizon is a potential fertilizer factory, with the European consortium FertigHy considering a 1.3 billion euro investment in a factory in the Somme region of northern France.
