Dhaka, Dec 03 (V7N) — Customs officials at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport detained five passengers on a Dhaka-bound flight from Malaysia for attempting to smuggle gold worth approximately TK 7.5 crore.

The contraband included five gold discs, two gold pieces, and 100 grams of gold ornaments cleverly concealed inside the coil of a vending machine.

Acting on a tip-off, the Commissioner of Customs House, Dhaka, instructed the preventive team and on-duty officials to monitor the passengers arriving from Malaysia. Upon scanning the vending machine wrapped in blankets, the gold—approximately seven kilograms—was discovered.

The accused passengers were immediately detained, and an investigation has been launched to determine the origin and intended destination of the smuggled gold.

Customs authorities are preparing to file a criminal case against the detainees at the concerned police station.
