Dhaka, July 12 (V7N)- In Dhaka, heavy rain persisted overnight into Friday morning, followed by intermittent showers continuing into the afternoon. The rainfall began early in the morning and was ongoing as of the report filed at approximately 11:10 am.

Many individuals were observed navigating through ankle-deep water in several areas, including Nayapaltan, Paltan, Khilgaon, Tilpapara, Basabo, Malibagh, Fakirapool, Arambagh, Motijheel, Tejgaon, Mirpur, and various parts of old Dhaka, affecting both residential and commercial districts.

Certain roads in Nayapaltan and Motijheel were submerged under up to one and a half feet of water, although conditions improved slightly as water levels began receding by the afternoon.

Areas like Nazira Bazaar, Bangshal, North-South Road, and parts of Azimpur experienced severe flooding due to the heavy rainfall. Major thoroughfares such as Jia Sarani in Kadamtali faced significant waterlogging, disrupting daily commutes for locals.

Efforts are underway to address waterlogging in Sayedabad's Doyaganj, Jurain, Mir Hazirbagh, Maniknagar, and Gopibagh railway areas, where residents have long endured these challenges.

Rainwater also affected private vehicles and CNG-run autorickshaws on main roads, causing engine issues and breakdowns, as reported by motorists.

Shoppers, travelers returning home, and morning joggers faced significant inconveniences due to the weather conditions. Monirul Islam, a private car driver from Mouchak, described being stranded for about 40 minutes due to waterlogging while attempting to travel to Khilgaon.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the city's drainage system, Mujjammel said, highlighted concerns about Dhaka becoming increasingly uninhabitable during the rainy season, particularly in low-lying areas.

Abul Kalama, a meteorologist from the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, reported 60 millimeters of rainfall between 6 am and 9 am, attributing the weather to an active monsoon over Bangladesh.

The accumulation of rainwater on streets led to numerous vehicles, including motorcycles, private cars, and buses, being stranded, exacerbating traffic congestion across affected areas. Additionally, the absence of manhole covers contributed to accidents at various locations.

Residents of Ward 37 in Badda Thana, under the jurisdiction of Dhaka North City Corporation, continue to face significant challenges from waterlogging. Vulnerable areas such as Anand Nagar, Post Office Lane, Sahabuddin Mor, Bazar Lane, Barda Tek Jora Khambar, and locations within the DIT Project experience disruptions from even minor rainfall, severely impacting daily life. Touhidul Islam Riaz, a resident of Badda, expressed frustration over the lack of resolution despite repeated complaints.

Observations by local resident Sarajmin indicated notable water accumulation within Post Office Lane, with some areas experiencing ankle-deep water. Residents resorted to rickshaws to reach mosques just 100 meters away for Friday prayers to avoid muddy conditions. Some households and shops implemented raised platforms to prevent water ingress.

Residents remain hopeful that future measures will alleviate recurring waterlogging issues, ensuring smoother daily life in the years ahead.
