Dhaka, Sep 14 (V7N) – Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) plans to resume metro rail services on Fridays shortly, with an official announcement anticipated in the coming days, potentially as early as Wednesday.

Originally slated for July, the launch was postponed due to violent protests over quota reforms, which resulted in a 37-day suspension of metro services.

Since August 25, metro rail services have resumed, but Kazipara and Mirpur-10 stations remain closed due to vandalism during the protests, causing significant inconvenience to regular commuters. However, there is promising news as DMTCL works to address the situation.

Efforts are underway to reopen Kazipara station within the next month, and plans are in place to quickly restore services at Mirpur-10. The workforce roster for Friday operations is nearly complete, and progress is being made swiftly.

Following the interim government's recent cancellation of former Managing Director MAN Siddique’s contract, Mohammad Abdur Rouf has been appointed as the new Managing Director. Rouf has made it a priority to reopen Kazipara station and start Friday metro services.

Under directives from the interim government’s road transport ministry, DMTCL has developed a plan to operate the metro from Friday afternoons until night. Repairs at Kazipara station are being carried out with locally sourced equipment and supplies to expedite relief for passengers.

Although previous estimates suggested that repairs could take up to a year, DMTCL is employing strategies to accelerate the process. Equipment from less busy stations and those planned for the Kamalapur extension project will be utilized to hasten the reopening of Kazipara and Mirpur-10.

The attacks on Kazipara and Mirpur-10 stations during the quota reform protests had led to the suspension of services. While the previous government had anticipated a lengthy repair period, the current approach aims to restore operations much sooner.
