Dhaka, Sep 23 (V7N) — Students across all metropolitan areas, including Dhaka, will be eligible for half fares on public buses starting from Tuesday, September 24. The fare discount will apply from 6 am to 12 pm, seven days a week, including weekends. However, students must wear their uniforms or carry their identity cards to avail of this discount. The scheme does not extend to rural areas of the country.

This decision comes after long-standing demands from students, as confirmed by Md. Saiful Alam, General Secretary of the Dhaka Road Transport Owners Association. He acknowledged the historical role students have played in key national movements, such as the Language Movement of 1952, the independence in 1971, and the overthrow of the dictatorial government in 2024, calling the fare reduction a gesture of recognition for their contributions.

The announcement was made during a seminar chaired by the association's president, MA Baten. Senior officials from the police traffic department, along with transport owners and workers, were also present to discuss and implement the plan.

The new fare policy is expected to ease the financial burden on students and has been widely welcomed by the student community.
