Kingston, Oct 28 (V7N)- The strongest hurricane of the year, Melissa, is wreaking havoc across the Caribbean, leaving at least seven people dead as it moves toward Jamaica as a Category 5 storm.

According to BBC News, three people have died in Jamaica and Haiti, while one death was reported in the Dominican Republic. The hurricane has brought torrential rain and winds reaching speeds of up to 175 miles per hour, causing widespread destruction in several island nations.

The Jamaican government has declared a state of emergency and issued warnings across the country. Evacuation efforts are underway to move residents to safer areas. Officials warn that Hurricane Melissa could make landfall by early Tuesday morning (October 28, local time).

After striking Jamaica, the storm is expected to move toward Cuba, the Bahamas, and the Turks and Caicos Islands, potentially causing further devastation along its path.
