Ukhiya, July 3 (V7N)- In Ukhiya Upazila of Cox's Bazar, three people, including Rohingyas, have died due to intense torrential rain. Mountain slopes and heavy rain have caused landslides and inundated the water in canals in the low-lying areas. Several thousand families are trapped. At least more than five hundred domesticated animals have died, and more than half of the houses have been destroyed.
 
On Tuesday night into Wednesday morning (July 3), incidents of landslides occurred in the Balukhali Jummar Chhara 8 (East) and Moragachhatala 11 Rohingya camps in Ukhiya.
 
In this incident, two people died: Md. Anwar Hossain (21), son of Dil Mohammad of F-1 Block of Camp-11, and Sifat Ullah (13), son of Alam and Rohingya Sahara Khatun of the Nokshingchari Union. This information was confirmed by Ukhiya Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shamim Hossain.
 
On the other hand, in Ward No. 2, Halodiyapalong Union of the upazila, a child named Md. Rakib (7) drowned in floodwaters. The accident occurred on Wednesday afternoon (July 3). He was the son of Ali Akbar of that ward.
 
It is learned that Rakib went to check if there were fish caught in his father's fishing net under the culvert beside the house. At one point, he got stuck inside the net with the flow of water and couldn't get out of the net, resulting in his death. Later, locals found him and recovered his body in a deceased state. Imrul Kayes Chowdhury, Chairman of Halodiyapalong Union Parishad, confirmed the incident.
 
Meanwhile, due to several days of heavy rainfall, ordinary people including day laborers have been affected severely. This has disrupted normal life. People are suffering extensively in their movement.
 
Among the five unions of the upazila, the residents of Jaliapalong Union have been the most affected. Due to being in the lower and downstream areas, the people of this union have been more affected by flooding. Hundreds of cattle, including cows, buffaloes, goats, geese, and chickens, have lost their lives.
 
Various representatives responsible for the unions of Jaliapalong, Halodiyapalong, Ratnapalong, Rajapalong, and Palongkhali have informed about the situation in their respective areas. They stated that many bridges, culverts, and houses have been damaged, making many roads impassable. They have informed that they are currently providing assistance to the affected individuals personally as there has been no assistance from the government yet.
 
Meanwhile, on Wednesday (July 3) afternoon, the officials of the upazila visited various flood-affected areas and searched for stranded people, said Upazila Executive Officer Tanvir Hossain.
 
Tanvir Hossain of UNO said, 'Several thousand people are trapped due to flooding. I have interacted with many affected people in the flooded areas to gather information.'
 
He said, 'The amount of damage and the situation regarding the affected higher officials have been informed. Distribution will be made among the affected as soon as any cooperation comes from the government.'"
