Dhaka, August 2- As monsoonal winds intensify, heavy rainfall has commenced along the coast of Bangladesh, particularly affecting areas in the southeast. The Meteorological Department has issued local warning signal number three for the ports of Chittagong, Cox's Bazar, Payra, and Mongla. Additionally, Chittagong has been placed on high alert for potential landslides.
Despite a brief reduction in rainfall levels last night, Chittagong and its surrounding areas have experienced consistent moderate to heavy rain over the past few days. The Meteorological Office forecasts continued heavy rainfall in the region, posing a significant risk of landslides.
In Cox's Bazar, continuous rainfall over the past five days has resulted in substantial flooding. Lower regions of the district are underwater, affecting areas including Teknaf, Ukhia, Cox's Bazar Sadar, Ramu, Eidgaon, Chakaria, Pekua, and Kutubdia. Residents are growing increasingly concerned as dark clouds loom overhead, signaling more rain to come.
Patuakhali's coastal region, particularly Rangabali, is experiencing mild gusts of wind. The rough seas have prompted fishing trawlers to return to shore, halting deep-sea fishing activities. Continuous torrential rains in Kalapara have inundated the area, damaging seed beds and causing significant agricultural losses.
In Bagerhat's Sharankhola, persistent rains have submerged hundreds of acres of Aman paddy fields, leaving farmers in distress. The heavy downpour has also triggered landslides in two locations within Khagrachari district headquarters, though no major damage has been reported. However, rising water levels in the Chengi river have flooded low-lying areas, exacerbating the situation.
Road communication has been severely impacted in the hill tracts region. Heavy rains have cut off the main road between Bandarban and Thanchi, as well as the route connecting Alikadam upazila to the district headquarters. In Naikshyongchari, over 200 families are facing severe flooding, forcing them to evacuate their homes.
The inclement weather has also affected public life in Netrakona, with low-income individuals bearing the brunt of the disruption. In Barisal city, continuous rainfall has disrupted normal activities, with residents only venturing out when absolutely necessary.
As the monsoon continues, authorities are urging caution and preparedness, particularly in areas prone to landslides and flooding. The situation remains fluid, with the potential for further weather-related disruptions in the coming days.
