Dhaka, Oct 17 (V7N) – Former Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Mohammad Atiqul Islam has been ordered to jail in connection with three murder cases filed at the Mohammadpur Police Station in the capital. Islam was arrested on Wednesday from the Mohakhali DOHS area and presented before Dhaka's Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) court on Thursday.

His defense team submitted a bail application during the court session on Thursday morning, but after hearing arguments from both sides, Judge Ali Haider rejected the plea and issued an order to send Atiqul Islam to jail.

In a related development, several other high-profile individuals, including former Agriculture Minister Abdur Razzak, former Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder, former Lands Minister Narayan Chandra Chand, former Home Secretary Jahangir Alam, and former Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Lt. Col. (retd) Farooq Khan, are also facing trial in murder cases linked to various police stations. Additionally, Tanveer Hasan Saikat, General Secretary of Dhaka University Chhatra League, has been arrested and similarly ordered to be sent to jail.

These high-profile arrests mark a significant escalation in legal proceedings against former government officials and political figures, signaling a firm stance by the judiciary on addressing serious criminal allegations.
