Dhaka, Feb 17 (V7N) – The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has ordered the imprisonment of six Awami League leaders and activists, including former Dhaka North Mayor Atiqul Islam, in a case related to crimes against humanity. The case involves organized killings during the July Movement in Uttara. The investigation report against the accused is to be submitted by March 9.
A tribunal, headed by Justice Golam Mortuza Majumder, issued the order on Monday (February 17) after a hearing that started at 1:45 PM.
The prosecution presented video evidence of violence in Uttara during the July protests.
The prosecution alleged that the Awami League, Jubo League, and Chhatra League were actively involved in suppressing student and public demonstrations, which led to indiscriminate firing.
Prosecutor Mizanul Islam claimed that Atiqul Islam instigated the violence, leading to brutal crackdowns on protesters.
The accused are facing 16 cases in various Uttara police stations in connection with the July mass uprising.
Court Proceedings
Former mayor Atiqul Islam remained silent throughout the hearing.
After a 30-minute session, the tribunal ordered the arrest of Atiqul Islam and the five other accused, sending them to jail.
The ICT's decision marks a significant development in the legal proceedings surrounding the July protests, which saw intense clashes between security forces and demonstrators demanding an end to discrimination and government accountability.
