Savar, Dhaka, Jan 09, (V7N) - In a shocking incident in Ashulia, Savar, a tea vendor named Sainik Islam miraculously survived after being shot in the left knee by extortionists and jumping from the rooftop of a three-story building to save his life.

The incident occurred on Thursday (January 9) afternoon in the Fulbagan area of Gorat, Ashulia.

Sainik Islam, a resident of Nilphamari's Dimla Thana, is the son of late Abdul Latif. He lives in a rented house in Gorat with his elderly mother and runs a tea stall for his livelihood.

The accused, Ashiq, Kana Sajib, and Parvez, are locals of the Gorat area, while Taiyab hails from Bagerhat.

Survivor's Testimony

According to Sainik Islam, the accused had been demanding extortion money from him for a while, which he refused to pay. On Thursday, when he went to Fulbagan to buy cigarettes, the accused chased him. Taiyab fired three shots at him, two of which missed, but the third struck his left knee. Injured and bleeding, Sainik took shelter in a room on the third floor of a nearby building, locking the door from the inside. However, the attackers tried to break down the door, forcing him to jump from the rooftop to save his life. He sought refuge in a nearby house, where locals rushed him to the hospital.

Mother’s Account

Sainik’s mother, Nazma Begum, stated that the extortionists, including Ashiq, Sajib, Taiyab, and others, regularly demand money ranging from 50 to 100 taka from shopkeepers in the area. Failure to pay often leads to severe beatings. On the day of the incident, when Sainik refused to pay, the attackers became enraged, leading to the shooting.

Medical Update

The injured vendor was initially treated at the Ashulia Women and Children Hospital before being referred to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) in Dhaka for further treatment.

Police Response

Kamal Hossain, Investigation Officer of Ashulia Police Station, confirmed that Sainik is receiving medical care. While no arrests have been made yet, police operations are underway to apprehend the attackers and recover the weapon used in the crime.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nur-e-Alam Siddiqui assured that the matter is under investigation and appropriate actions will be taken.
