In a significant crackdown operation, Bangladeshi law enforcement agencies have intercepted a cache of heavy firearms believed to have been smuggled from Myanmar. The operation, spanning over 72 hours in Ukhiya and Teknaf Upazila of Cox's Bazar, resulted in the apprehension of five individuals suspected of involvement in the illegal arms trade.
Md. Mahafuzul Islam, Superintendent Police (SP) said, the seized weaponry includes a German-made G3 rifle, accompanied by one magazine, two one-shooter guns, and a staggering 92 rounds of ammunition. The operation, which commenced on Tuesday, May 14th, was prompted by intelligence indicating the infiltration of arms and ammunition across the border, with the perpetrators purportedly awaiting delivery within Bangladesh.
Among the detainees are Mostak Ahmed (37) and Kashem (38) from the Ukhiya area, Lotifa Akter (34) and Rabiul Alam (28) hailing from Maheshkhali, alongside Bellal Hossain (38) from Cox’s Bazar. Their apprehension marks a significant step in curbing the illicit arms trade that has been a growing concern for law enforcement in the region.
In a parallel development, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-14) uncovered a hideout linked to the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) in Lal Pahar, adjacent to the Kutupalong Rohingya camp in Ukhiya. The meticulously executed operation, spanning six hours, resulted in the arrest of two suspected terrorists, along with the seizure of weapons, grenades, and rocket shells.
These developments underscore the persistent challenges faced by authorities in thwarting illegal activities along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border. The concerted efforts of law enforcement agencies reflect a commitment to maintaining peace and security in the region amidst escalating concerns over cross-border smuggling and insurgent activities.
