Madaripur, July 9 (V7N) - Syed Abed Ali Jibon, a driver of the Public Service Commission (PSC), came to Dhaka at the age of just 8 in search of a livelihood. He worked as a porter there and suffered greatly, often sleeping on the pavement.
Later, he learned to drive and got a job at the PSC. Then he got involved with the PSC question leak syndicate. From there, he never looked back. He amassed a huge amount of illegal wealth and power. He aspired to become the chairman of the Dasar Upazila Parishad and has been campaigning for the upazila chairman election for a long time.
Talking to locals, it was learned that Syed Abed Ali Jibon is the son of the late Abdur Rahman Mir from Paschim Betla village in Dasar Upazila, Madaripur. Among Abdur Rahman Mir’s three sons and one daughter, Syed Abed Ali Jibon is the second. Rahman Mir’s eldest son, Jabed Ali, works in agriculture. The youngest son, Sabed Ali, still makes a living by driving an auto-rickshaw in the area. Their brother is Syed Abed Ali Jibon.
In the area, he introduced himself to people as an industrialist. Abed Ali’s son, Syed Sohanur Rahman Siam, used to drive expensive cars. Abed Ali himself also drove expensive cars. No one in the area knew he was a driver. It was publicized that he was involved in the real estate business in Dhaka.
According to local sources, as Abed Ali Jibon’s wealth and prosperity grew, he changed his last name to "Syed." His son, Syed Sohanur Rahman Siam, recently spoke at a gathering about his father’s rise. He said, "My father started from nothing. When he was 8 years old, he went to Dhaka to make a living. He started his business by earning 50 takas as a porter." Now, he is the owner of a limited company. He has grown through hard work, claimed Syed Sohanur Rahman Siam, the son of Abed Ali Jibon. However, a recent media report revealed shocking information.
For nearly a decade, Syed Abed Ali Jibon has been involved in the question paper leak syndicate of the BPSC. This news has created a sensation in the area.
However, Syed Abed Ali Jibon's story is more dramatic than a movie. He returns to his village and engages in the upazila election campaign. He and his son, Chhatra League leader Syed Sohanur Rahman Siam, campaign in luxury cars worth millions. Father and son donate generously in the area. Syed Abed Ali Jibon has built a luxurious house in his village at the cost of millions and also built a mosque nearby.
Additionally, he has occupied government land by the roadside to build a cattle farm and a market. He has bought significant properties in Pantapara and Purba Botla villages in the upazila. Locals say he also has multiple houses in Dhaka and a three-story hotel in Kuakata, Patuakhali.
His sudden rise from being just a driver to a wealthy individual has made people curious about him. Syed Abed Ali Jibon was a former driver for the PSC chairman. But the locals were unaware. Last Eid-ul-Adha, he distributed one kilogram of meat to 100 people, riding in an expensive car. He shared that video on his Facebook page.
Abed Ali’s son Siam uses not just one, but multiple expensive cars. He studied in Shillong, India, and then at a costly private university in the country. He is the vice president of the Dasar Upazila Chhatra League.
To show off their influence, father and son take pictures with big leaders and officials and widely promote them on Facebook. Syed Abed Ali shared information about a hotel he was building on his Facebook page. On May 18, he posted, "We laid the foundation stone for our new hotel today. Hotel Sun Marina, Kuakata."
A recent investigation by a private TV channel in the country revealed that questions were leaked in 30 recruitment exams, including the BCS. A syndicate of six officials and employees of the Bangladesh Public Service Commission (BPSC) has been involved in question leaks for a long time, according to the report. One of the accused employees is Syed Abed Ali Jibon, the former driver of the PSC chairman.
However, despite multiple attempts to contact Syed Abed Ali Jibon and his son Syed Sohanur Rahman Siam on their phone numbers, they did not answer. Their village home is also locked. An anonymous police officer mentioned that the entire Abed Ali family has secured European visas and may leave the country at any time.
Regarding this, Advocate Masud Parvez, president of the Madaripur Development Struggle Council, said, "There should be questions raised by the conscious public about those who have acquired abnormal wealth. The government should take action against them. They should be severely punished for tarnishing the reputation of trusted institutions by leaking question papers."
Atiqur Rahman, Deputy Director of the Madaripur Integrated Office of the Anti-Corruption Commission, said, "If someone files a complaint on this matter, we will contact the head office and investigate the accused person."
