Dhaka, Sep 19 (V7N) – Three students of Dhaka University's Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall have been detained for questioning regarding the mob lynching of a man, identified as Tofazzal from Barisal, on Wednesday night. The man was beaten to death on suspicion of theft.

Among the detainees are Jalal Ahmed, a former deputy secretary of the science and technology affairs unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League's Fazlul Huq wing and a student of the university’s physics department, and Mohammad Shumon, a student in the soil, water, and environment department. The identity of the third detained student has yet to be confirmed.

DU Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed confirmed the detentions on Thursday afternoon, stating that the university's proctorial team apprehended the students and handed them over to Shahbagh Police Station for further investigation.

Tofazzal, suspected of being a thief, was subjected to severe physical assault by students in the hall’s guestroom from around 8:30 pm to 10 pm. Despite being briefly fed at the university canteen, the beatings continued. His condition worsened, and he was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around midnight, where he was pronounced dead.

Eyewitnesses reported that Tofazzal had entered the hall unintentionally and suffered from mental health conditions. Following his death, protests erupted on campus, with students demanding justice and holding a rally at the Raju Sculpture.
