Khagrachhari , Oct 1 (V7N): The tourism sector in Khagrachhari is struggling as the local authorities have extended their advisory discouraging tourists from visiting Sajek Valley for an additional three days, prolonging the halt that has already been in place for nearly a week.

Jobaida Akter, additional district magistrate of Rangamati, informed Media that the decision was made today in a district administration meeting, citing ongoing security concerns. The directive now extends from October 1 to October 3.

Although Sajek Valley is part of Rangamati district, most tourists access it through Dighinala upazila in Khagrachhari, due to better road conditions. Located 70 kilometers from Khagrachhari town and 49 kilometers from Dighinala, Sajek Valley typically draws large numbers of visitors, significantly benefiting Khagrachhari’s economy.

However, the tourism sector has taken a heavy hit since the original advisory, first issued from September 25 to 27, following unrest in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. This was later extended to September 30, and now for another three days.

The directive has led to empty hotels and motels across Khagrachhari. Swapan Debnath, owner of Hotel Aronyo Bilas, noted a drastic drop in bookings, with only five rooms occupied compared to full occupancy this time last year.

Local businesses, including small traders and transport workers, are also feeling the impact. Md Yusuf, a CNG auto-rickshaw driver, reported a significant decrease in trips between Khagrachhari and Dighinala, from 16 trips daily to just five or six. Restaurants like Bamboo Shoot Eco Food Court have also seen a sharp decline in customers, with manager Smritimoy Tripura reporting major financial losses.

Rozlin Shahid Chowdhury, additional district magistrate of Khagrachhari, acknowledged the severe effect on the district’s tourism sector but stressed that the advisory is based on Rangamati administration’s security concerns. The decision to reopen Sajek Valley to tourists will depend on Rangamati authorities.
