Jhalkathi, Oct 03 (V7N)- A young man in Jhalkathi was handed over to the police after allegedly insulting Islam and the Holy Prophet on Facebook Messenger, sparking tensions in the city. The incident took a dramatic turn when the police pickup van, while transporting the suspect, lost control and plunged into a canal. The situation escalated, but law enforcement and army personnel were able to restore order.

The incident occurred around 10 PM on Wednesday in the city’s municipal mini park. The accused, Adit Islam, son of Alauddin Dhali, a former leader of the District Volunteer League, was reportedly involved in an argument on Facebook Messenger a day earlier. During the argument, Adit allegedly made derogatory comments about Islam and the Prophet, which incited anger among locals.

According to police and eyewitness reports, a group of enraged youths confronted Adit in the Pourmini Park area and began to physically assault him. Police were called to the scene, where they rescued Adit from the mob and took him into custody. However, as the police van was transporting Adit, it lost control and fell into a canal near the city jail, creating further chaos. A large crowd gathered, leading to heightened tensions.

Police officers, along with army personnel, quickly intervened to manage the situation. Adit was taken to Jhalkathi Sadar Hospital for medical treatment, and the police van was recovered from the canal.

Jhalkathi Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shahidul Islam confirmed that Adit is under police custody and that legal proceedings are underway. Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Md. Mohitul Islam provided further details, stating that Adit's argument with a friend over Facebook Messenger had led to the inflammatory comments, which triggered the mob's response.

The authorities are preparing to file charges against Adit, and police have assured that further investigations are ongoing to prevent any further unrest.
