Ukhia, Oct 14 (V7N) — Law enforcement authorities arrested 24 Rohingyas in the Inani area of Jaliapalong Union, Ukhiya, on Monday morning. Among the detained individuals were 14 women and 10 men, all residents of various Rohingya camps in Ukhiya. The group was reportedly attempting to flee to Malaysia by boat but was intercepted after their vessel was forced to turn back.
The arrest occurred around 10 a.m. after the authorities noticed a large group of Rohingyas, numbering over a hundred, suddenly appearing in the locality after crossing the beach's sand dunes. Most of the group managed to flee, but 24 were apprehended.
Khursida Begum , a 24-year-old resident of Rohingya Camp No. 17 in Ukhiya, explained that they had set sail from Teknaf in a trawler, intending to reach Malaysia. However, their journey was thwarted when the Myanmar Navy blocked their passage. “The sailor turned the boat back, and we ended up stranded at sea for 10 days,” she added.
Rezaul Karim , the officer in charge of the Inani police outpost , confirmed the arrest, stating that the group was planning to cross to Malaysia. After extensive interrogation, the 24 detained Rohingyas were sent back to their respective camps.
Shafiqul Islam , the investigation officer at Ukhia police station , verified the details and emphasized that the incident highlights ongoing attempts by Rohingyas to seek refuge in Malaysia, despite the dangerous journey and obstacles they face.
