Teknaf, Nov 07 (V7N)— The Arakan Army (AA), an armed rebel group from Myanmar, has released 20 Bangladeshi fishermen detained earlier this week after they inadvertently crossed into Myanmar waters. The fishermen were handed over to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) at Shahpori Dwip jetty in Teknaf around 4 p.m. on Thursday.

The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon when the fishermen, hailing from Teknaf Upazila's Shahpori Dwip, were fishing near the Naikhondia area close to the Naf River estuary and the Bay of Bengal. According to Lt. Colonel Md. Mohiuddin Ahmed, captain of BGB Teknaf 2 Battalion, the fishermen had unknowingly crossed the Zero Line of the Bangladesh-Myanmar border while using both hand-operated and engine-powered boats. This led to their detention by the Arakan Army on charges of illegal entry.

Following the detention, the BGB initiated communication with the Arakan Army, resulting in the successful return of the fishermen. Upon their arrival, the fishermen were reunited with their families after verifying their identities.

This swift resolution highlights the effective coordination between BGB and the Arakan Army in addressing cross-border incidents involving Bangladeshi nationals.
