Cox's Bazar, Nov 19 (V7N)- Residents of St. Martin's Island staged a four-hour road blockade at Kalatali Dolphin Junction in Cox's Bazar, demanding the lifting of restrictions on tourist travel and overnight stays on the island. The protest caused significant disruption, halting traffic and bringing the area to a standstill.

The demonstration began around 11 a.m., with hundreds of islanders voicing their demands through slogans. They argued that the restrictions imposed were severely affecting the island's economy and livelihood, which heavily depend on tourism.

The protest was temporarily suspended after assurances from the district administration. Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Md. Yamin Hossain addressed the protesters, stating:

"We also agree with your logical demands. We have communicated your concerns to higher authorities. Rest assured, your issues will be addressed soon. Please suspend the protest for now."

This assurance prompted the residents to vacate the road, alleviating the traffic congestion.

Abdul Malek, a representative of the islanders, commented:

"We have temporarily suspended our protest, considering the suffering of the tourists. However, we will not return to the island until our demands are met."

The protest highlighted the growing frustration among St. Martin's residents, who have been facing economic challenges due to the restrictions. The demonstration not only underscored their grievances but also disrupted normal life in the area for several hours.

The district administration has promised to escalate the matter to higher authorities, offering hope for a resolution. However, the residents remain vigilant and have hinted at resuming their agitation if their demands are not addressed promptly.
