Cox's Bazar, Dec 04 (V7N) — A fire broke out at the Kutupalong Rohingya Camp in Ukhiya, Cox's Bazar, on Tuesday night, leaving several shanty houses destroyed. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

The blaze began around 8:30 PM in the C/3 Block of Camp-4X, reportedly due to a wood stove being used for cooking in the kitchen of Mohammad Yunus, a Rohingya resident.

Station Master Mohammad Shariful Islam of the Ukhiya Fire Service confirmed that a fire service unit, with assistance from locals, managed to extinguish the fire within 15 to 20 minutes, preventing further spread.

While there were no casualties, several families lost their homes and belongings in the incident. Those affected have taken temporary shelter in a nearby school operated by an NGO.

Incidents of fire are not uncommon in the overcrowded Rohingya camps, where makeshift shelters and the use of open flames for cooking pose significant risks. Authorities and humanitarian organizations are urged to implement stricter safety measures and provide safer cooking alternatives to prevent such incidents in the future.
