Chilmari, Dec 08 (V7N)- The intensity of winter continues to rise in Chilmari Upazila of Kurigram, creating hardships for residents, particularly low-income groups living in riverside areas.

The Kurigram Meteorological Office recorded a minimum temperature of 13°C on Sunday (December 8). Subal Chandra Sarkar, the office's Officer-in-Charge, confirmed that the temperature has fluctuated between 12°C and 16°C over the last 15 days and is expected to drop further in the coming days.

Residents report that cold weather grips the region from evening until morning, with temperatures remaining low during the day despite occasional sunshine.

Majedul Islam, a 74-year-old local, expressed his distress, stating,

"I can’t afford warm clothes for my family. This winter feels much harsher, and I worry about how we’ll get through it."

Similarly, Mokched Mia, a tractor worker in the Gaber Tal area, said he must venture out to work despite the biting cold.

"I can’t stay home because of my stomach. I’ve bought second-hand clothes to somehow manage the cold," he shared.

The winter has boosted sales of warm clothes in local markets. Khokon Mia, a seller at Thanahat market, mentioned,

"The demand for warm clothing has risen significantly due to the cold weather."

According to Subal Chandra Sarkar, temperatures are expected to drop further in the coming days, increasing the challenges for vulnerable populations.

The worsening cold conditions underscore the urgent need for support, particularly for low-income families who lack adequate clothing and heating to combat the harsh weather. Authorities and social organizations may need to step in with relief efforts to help the affected residents during this difficult time.
